Nonetheless there are many beautiful alternative places to equally attract you and are worth you forfeiting some of your time to visit. A few miles along the A39 will find you in: Bucks Mills – a tucked away hamlet on a precarious hillside reminiscent of the days of contraband and smugglers. Clovelly- reputed to be the prettiest village in England, this privately owned collection of fishermen’s cottages and cobbled lanes is a ‘must see’. Hartland – Quay, Point and Village are separate locations exposed to some of the most tortuous winds this rugged coast brings to bear. If you can cope with this then the scenery is literally breathtaking! Travelling on down this main road will take you into Cornwall with its own distinct beauty, history and attractions. In the other direction: Bideford- known as ‘The little white town’ with the famous bridge with the odd arches, this active port is home to the sole surviving three-masted schooner ‘Kathleen & May’ as well as the quay from which to book the boat to Lundy Island, home of the Puffin! Appledore - all the atmosphere of an Olde Worlde port with narrow streets and fisherman's cottages.    Instow - set on the banks of the River Torridge overlooking the shipyards of Appledore. Fremington Quay - one of the places for a Cream Tea! and Barnstaple - the largest shopping and market town of North Devon beckon.
